Sazerac. This amazing cocktail was almost lost to history, but was recovered during our recent distillery boom. It is now (as of June 2008) the official cocktail of New Orleans. This cocktail (like the Knickerbocker) dates back to American Civil War times, prior to the appearance of cocktails as we know them.
Originally, the Sazerac and Knickerbocker were iced punch bar drinks. People would patron bars and barkeeps would ladle out drinks from punch bowls. ....That's how old these drinks are!
The modern Sazerac uses Rye Whiskey (Bulleit in our case), bitters and Absinthe. Absinthe was banned in the US since 1910 based upon a now proven false premise of it being a mind bending drug or hallucinogen. However, today the wild and false claims of prohibitionists have been put to rest and once again it is being made by distilleries all over the world. Ours comes from our local distillery Tattersall.
These days we can join the famous artists, poets and thinkers who thrived on drinks made from Absinthe like: Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Marcel Proust, Aleister Crowley, Erik Satie, Edgar Allan Poe, Lord Byron and Alfred Jarry. ....Cheers to them all! Please share this small piece of history with your friends.
